Béatrice Godard

Dr. Beatrice Godard, Professor, University of Montreal, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, teaches in the Bioethics Programs and has designed and launched courses in research ethics, research methods, Master and Ph.D. thesis seminars, and global health ethics. She directed the Bioethics Programs from 2004 to 2010. Prior to joining the University of Montreal in 2001, Dr. Beatrice Godard worked at INSERM in Paris for the Public and Professional Policy Committee of the European Society of Human Genetics elaborating on professional guidelines. She was an active contributor to the development of international guidelines and policy documents in human genetics/genomics in North America & Europe.

Her research expertise focuses on the study of ethical and social issues and their integration with applied genomics science and attendant products. Aiming to lay an evidence-based empirical foundation that can both discern and anticipate the socio-ethical issues associated with –omics technologies in the pursuit of personalized health interventions, her research work is centered on an empirical ethics perspective. To that end, she integratively employs a wide range of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Basically, her research work concentrates on emerging ethical responsibilities in genomics at the juncture between research and the clinic and it is oriented on the development of frameworks for ethical decision-making. She is particularly keen on examining factors influencing the adoption of genomics technology innovations by different stakeholders.

Dr. Beatrice Godard research work is funded by Genome Quebec, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Fund for Health Research in Quebec (FRQS). Since the beginning of her career, Dr. Beatrice Godard has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and books’ chapters and she is frequently invited to give oral presentations in local and international conferences. She also serves as advisory member for several committees, boards or policy-making bodies.
